COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Specialist Certificate in Youth Mental Health Promotion is a Level 7 course delivered by the National Youth Council of Ireland and Jigsaw in partnership with the National University of Ireland, Galway. Aimed at those working with young people, in the youth work and related sectors, this course will be of interest to anyone looking to gain knowledge, skills and confidence on the principles and practices of promoting youth mental health.
Please note, due to Government restrictions, this course will take a blended learning approach meaning, elements will happen online on a facilitated platform. We hope when restrictions ease, to facilitate opportunities for face-to-face training (venue in Dublin to be decided).

COURSE AIM
This Specialist Certificate is designed to provide participants with professional education and training on the principles and practice of youth mental health promotion. It is designed for those working in the youth work and related sectors who wish to develop knowledge, skills and competencies in youth mental health promotion and its implementation in practice.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE: 3 MODULES
MODULE 1
Foundations of Health Promotion
- Definition of health and health promotion
- Health Promotion programme development
- Current issues in Health Promotion policy and practice
- Communication training and facilitation skills
MODULE 2
Specialism Module in Youth Mental Health
- Concepts and determinants of youth mental health, mental health equity, frameworks for practice
- Effective mental health promotion interventions, evidence-based principles of effective practice
- Principles of mental health promotion implementation- exploring the social-ecological model and a settings-based approach
- Effective mental health promotion interventions, evidence-based principles of effective practice
- Implementing youth mental health promotion strategies in youth work
MODULE 3
Project Development in Youth Mental Health
Course participants will be required to design and plan the implementation of a youth mental health promotion intervention with young people within the participants’ own work setting.
ACCREDITATION AND CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Specialist Certificate in Youth Health Promotion is a Level 7 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
Successful graduates who wish to apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion Programme offered by NUI Galway can carry forward ECTS, and on this basis are exempt from one optional module of the programme.
