Young Voices inform Growing Up in Ireland research – 18th May

May 18, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm IST

DESCRIPTION

The Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) Study Team and DCEDIY would like input from Young Voices aged 24-26 to inform and plan the upcoming GUI research. This consultation is being organised to help inform the next wave of the GUI study which plans to collect information from participants when they are 25 years old.

GUI is a very important Government funded longitudinal study that supports and informs policy and service development across a wide range of areas that impact the lives of children and young people.

As GUI is a longitudinal study, it collects information from the same individuals about their lives over time. Information has already been collected from these GUI participants when they were 9 years old, 13, 17 and 20. The main areas covered by the study are:

  • physical health;
  • socioemotional well-being;
  • education/training; and
  • civic/economic engagement.

CAPACITY

4-6 participants per focus group

COST

Free of charge

DURATION

Tuesday 18th May 5-6pm

OBJECTIVES

The topics included within each of the main areas covered by the study change to some extent every time information is collected by the study, as individuals grow older and what matters in their lives changes.

The aim of this focus group is to get some feedback from young adults on research procedures and the topics that should be considered for inclusion in the next survey.

Key themes in relation to procedures would be:

  • The best way to contact 25-year-olds (e.g. via email, phone etc)
  • What formats / modes would best engage young adults (e.g. face-to-face versus self-complete/ web survey/telephone survey)

In terms of topics, we would like to invite suggestions for new topics as well as discussing ways in which to approach issues being considered such as:

  • Education, training and work/work patterns/commutes
  • Relationships with parents, friends and partners
  • Parenthood / family formation
  • Housing / accommodation issues (e.g. access, costs, adequacy)
  • Supports for Unemployment
  • Income and managing money
  • Physical and mental health and well-being and use of health services
  • Political attitudes, activism, experience of discrimination
  • Volunteering and community involvement
  • Good and bad things about social media and the internet
  • Things that put 25-year-olds at risk
  • Sexual orientation, sexual experiences, sexual health
  • Travel and aspirations

The focus groups will not be asking about your own personal experience of any of these topics. Instead, they will be exploring how the researchers would ask young adults generally about these topics or what new topics should be considered. An audio recording of the focus groups will be made so that the researchers can make notes for later analysis. These notes will not keep a record of your names with your opinions.
