TRAINING DESCRIPTION

This is a 2-day training programme for trainers to deliver the NYCI child protection awareness programme within their organisation. It is for NYCI member organisations with an identified trainer who meets the NYCI child protection competencies criteria. 

This training is provided by the NYCI Child Protection Programme. Attendance for the entire 2 days is required.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

Ideally, trainers will come from a professional background and/or experience of training, child protection and working using a ‘child centred approach’. Trainers will have completed the Child Protection Awareness Programme training within their own organisation. The competencies required by Child Protection Trainers to deliver the child protection awareness programme must be met in order to attend: 

  • Be nominated by their organisation to attend and fulfil the role of CP trainer 
  • Have a background and in-depth experience in training delivery 
  • Have an excellent knowledge of child protection policy at national level, including legislation, guidance and Children First 
  • Agree to deliver the Awareness Programme within their own organisation 
  • Demonstrate how they fulfil the competencies required to be a child protection trainer (see below)

  • Skills Good communication skills
  • Group facilitation skills
  • Training skills
  • Basic IT skills (including proficiency in PowerPoint)
  • Ability to complete a Training Needs Analysis and apply the outcomes
  • Ability to deal with difficult issues in training
  • Knowledge Relevant legislation pertaining to the awareness programme
  • Children First Act 2015 and Children First National Guidance 2017
  • Statutory roles and responsibilities
  • Reporting procedures (internal and external to the organisation)
  • Contact details for the Designated Liaison Person (and deputy DLP) and the relevant statutory services
  • Knowledge of the organisation (role, ethos, mission, organisational policies)
  • Organisational Child Safeguarding Statement and Child Protection Policy
  • Organisational recruitment and selection procedures, including Garda vetting
  • Equality and inclusiveness – as relevant to the particular target group
  • Knowledge of a range of appropriate responses to a variety of frequently asked questions (FAQs)

DESIGNED FOR

  • An identified trainer in a youth work organisation to deliver the NYCI child protection awareness programme within their organisation.
