Objectives

On Day 1 Cell Explorers, a science education and public engagement programme based in Galway will host an intensive four-hour workshop on how to set up and run a science club in a Youth organisation. Participants will learn how to manage collaboration between young people, who will be the drivers of their own STEM engagement as they choose which activities to complete and participate in peer-learning and teamwork. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn more about what it means to be a scientist, with structured discussions with the scientist explainers. The team at Cell Explorers will also run their ‘Fantastic DNA’ workshop where participants will be guided to extract DNA from common objects.

On Day 2 Youth practitioners will develop the skills necessary to facilitate practical and unique activities centered around sustainability and the Circular Economy. We will start day with a talk and workshop on Generation Glas, which is a youth led EPE programme run by BiOrbic, which focuses on the science behind sustainability and gives them the tools to become ambassadors in the fight for Climate Justice.

Friends of the Earth will facilitate our second workshop of the day which aims to support Youth practitioners in Environmental Science to be  confident in communicating the connections between consumption and production, social impacts such as wealth distribution, forced migration and climate change. This will include the Climate Counts Gameshow which will explore population distribution, wealth, Global Greenhouse Emissions, and Forced Migration, to explore peoples preconceptions around these issues and to critically reflect on how and why they know what they think they know.

Finally we are delighted to have The Rediscovery Centre come and hold the final workshop on STEAM education and the Circular Economy. This bespoke workshop has been designed for youth work and how to inspire young people to become involved in circular sustainability practises.
