Responding to a Disclosure 21st of September 2022

September 21, 2022

DESCRIPTION

The Child Protection Programme is delighted to partner with ASSC to pilot the provision of a half-day workshop in Dublin on Responding to a Disclosure to the youth work sector. Disclosure is a process where children/young people start to share their experiences of abuse or harm and it can take place over a period of time. It takes a lot of courage, and they need to have someone they can trust, who will believe them and get them help once they share this information. As a youth worker, a child/young person may come to view you as a trusted adult in their life and they may decide to disclose to you that they are experiencing harm or abuse. There are many ways in which a child/young person may disclose that they are experiencing harm. They disclose directly or indirectly through other indicators so it’s important we are able to recognise when we might be receiving a disclosure that something is wrong. This workshop is being run with a small number of participants so we can examine and role-play in small groups how you might recognise and respond to a disclosure from a child or young person. We are offering two opportunities to participate in these workshops; a morning workshop and an afternoon workshop. Please register your interest for the time that best suits you.

OBJECTIVES

  • To provide a space to explore what is a disclosure.
  • To understand and recognise when you receive a disclosure.
  • To give participants an opportunity to explore how they receive a disclosure and how they respond to the child/young person who is disclosing.
  • To explore the aftermath of a disclosure (reporting, supporting the child/young person, minding yourself).
