What’s in a photo? Unpacking photos of the Global South

November 24, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm GMT

How do we tell stories of young people from the Global South?  Our imagination is shaped by images from social media, TV, ads and films.  Sometimes these images tell a single story, but is it the whole story?

Hear from young people and youth workers on how these images have shaped their imagination and how examining these images can lead to a deeper knowledge.

Why should I attend?

At this panel we will explore

  • How might images inform how we currently tell the stories of young people from the Global South?
  • What can we do to reframe our understanding and build greater insights into the varied experiences of young people in the GS, and create an understanding of their complex lives (intersectionality) in this context?
  • How do we show that young people in the GS are impacted by the same complex range of factors as the young people in the Global North, and that, in addition, young people in the GS, have some unique factors impacting their lives disproportionately?
  • How can we relate these stories to young people in a youth work context in Ireland and build solidarity as a result?
