Join visual artist Jane Cummins (co-founder of Studio ID-11) and the National Youth Arts Programme team for a special workshop to explore the cyanotype printing process! This training event will help add to your creative facilitation toolkit for youth work settings, introduce you to an area of visual arts you might not have tried before with young people, and offer a fresh approach to exploring themes/topics with young people through visual arts!

The cyanotype process produces images through sun printing. An object is placed on paper that has been treated with ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. After that, it is exposed to sunlight and then washed in water, leading to the uncovered areas of the paper turning dark blue.

In the morning, Jane will share with you a step-by-step guide to the cyanotype process, preparing chemicals, and experimenting with different objects, papers, and other materials. In addition, she will touch on the toning of cyanotype prints and how to create wet cyanotypes. After lunch, we will use the cyanotype process to explore the topics of identity and memory, and create larger artworks. The experience will be supported by space for reflection and discussion later in the day.

Join us on June 29th for a fantastic creative day on the beautiful grounds of Maynooth University!

Delivered by

Jane Cummins (b.1984) is a Dublin-based photographer, using analog and alternative processes to create her images. She is a recent graduate from the MFA Photography programme at the Belfast School of Art, Ulster University. Cummins’s photographs deal with the human figure and the landscape. Her work is autobiographical, using self-portraiture in her search of the self, and aiding her acceptance of that self. She creates a dialogue between the figure and its surrounding landscape as she aims to find clarity and confront thoughts and experiences, which contribute to her identity.

Recipient of the Belfast Exposed Graduate Award, she has exhibited nationally and been published internationally. Her work is part of several collections including the Office of Public Works State Art Collection, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Collection. In 2019 Jane co-founded Studio ID-11 based Dublin’s Marlay Park, an art space where she facilitates alternative processing workshops for artists and analog photography camps for children and young people.
