Climate Justice Project: 2020
Future Generations – Climate Justice Project seeks to explore and highlight the systemic and human rights issues related to the climate crisis.
With this partnership, we will bring the unique voices of young people who are missing from the climate discourse. Young people from marginalised, rural, and disadvantaged backgrounds are often left out of the conversation and their reality is oftentimes not represented in national and global policies as a result.
Our project will specifically address this by:
- Creating the space for young people to explore the topic of Climate Justice
- Recognising the different layers of discriminations that exist in the climate crisis debate
- Supporting young people to develop the skills they need to be advocates of climate justice
- Empowering young people to take on a local/regional response to climate justice
- To facilitate a global response to climate justice by including youth voices from the global south
Climate Justice Resources
We have created this resource to support you to deliver climate justice work with young people. Please read, use and adapt it to suit your group’s needs.
With this resource we hope to:
- Inspire and support the youth sector to embed Climate Justice within their work
- Create opportunities for those young people who are often left out of the Climate Action conversations
- Equip organisations with the tools and knowledge to empower young people to join the conversation and take action through Climate Justice
- Identify key learning, resources and tools available to deliver this work with young people
Controversial Conversations
Young people from our steering group hosted a ‘Controversial Conversation’ online event entitled ‘Can everyone afford to be “Green”?’ on the 4th of November 2020.
Young people and those who work with young people within the Youth Sector, Education Sector, Development Sector and Policy makers and the broader Irish Society all attended. There were inputs from Mary Cunningham- Director of the National Youth Council of Ireland, Anna Keyes and Amy O Brien from YMCA & Fabian Jacob from Macra – Future Generation Steering group members, Christopher O’Sullivan – Cork South-West TD and vice chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Climate Action, Beth Doherty- Young activist, Thomas Duffy – President of Macra na Feirme, Kay Mc Cabe-Youth Worker Involve Youth Service and Mick Ferron – Regional Youth Service Manager Sphere 17.

Our Journey
with Climate Justice
On the 4th of December 2020, young people from the steering group committee organised a learning space with everyone that had been involved in the Future Generations Project.
The evening focused on each project’s journey with Climate Justice – what worked, what they found challenging, and how they made this experience unique and enjoyable for each other. We hope watching our journey will inspire you to step into your journey with Climate Justice.

The 2020 iteration of the Future Generations: Climate Justice Project was a consortium project between the National Youth Council of Ireland (lead agency), Macra na Feirme, Sphere17 Regional Youth Facility, YMCA Ireland, Involve Youth Services and SWAN Youth Service. It was funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth and Irish Aid.
