The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) – which represents organisations working with over 380,000 young people nationwide – has welcomed the appointment of Minister Katherine Zappone, TD as Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.Commenting on the appointment Mary Cunningham, Director of the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) said: “We congratulate the new Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone on her appointment. Her wide ranging experience in championing equality, working in partnership with the community to establish Ireland’s largest community education organisation, together with her passion for addressing the needs of those in disadvantaged communities and her commitment to early childhood care and education, as well as her her previous track record as a Senator, will equip her very well for this important and challenging new portfolio.
“This is an important time for young people in Ireland, with many issues including poverty, employment, mental health and well-being, homelessness and housing and emigration still presenting a real challenge. We look forward to working closely with Minister Zappone and her department to help address these challenges and to support implementation of the National Youth Strategy and to continue our work to ensure better outcomes for all young people in Ireland,” concluded Ms Cunningham.
