Just 2 weeks until registration deadline: Monday 14 May
The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is urging young people to have their voice heard and register to vote in the upcoming referendum on the European Stability treaty on May 31st.
“There is still time to register to vote. Any young person who is 18 years of age on or before May 31st can apply for inclusion on the supplementary register up until Monday, 14 May 2012,” said James Doorley, Assistant Director at NYCI.
“However we would advise prospective applicants not to leave it until the last day as the process involves getting the application stamped at a Garda Station,” added Mr Doorley.
“Not being on the register is a key reason why young people don’t vote, with many not even aware they have to register.* In fact, a previous NYCI study found that as little as 26% of 18-25 year olds were not registered to vote, rising to 36% among 18-21 year olds,” continued Mr Doorley.
“Also a number of young people who have moved away from where they are registered to vote, because they are in education or employment elsewhere, and are unable to travel back to vote can change their voting registration to their current residence, again on or before May 14th.
“We strongly encourage young people to register and to go out and vote in the upcoming referendum. It is your democratic right and a great opportunity to have your say in how we shape the future of this country,” concluded Mr Doorley.
For young people seeking to register, the relevant form (RFA2) can be obtained from your local authority or can be downloaded from www.checktheregister.ie . Likewise those wishing to change their registration address can download the RFA3 form. These forms must then be completed and brought to a local Garda station to be witnessed and stamped, and I.D. will be required.
