Online one-‘start’-shop for volunteering in youth work launched as part of
National Volunteering Week (May 14th – May 20th)
The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is celebrating the ongoing contribution of volunteers to youth work by launching an online portal which highlights the opportunities and supports available to those seeking to volunteer.
“With over 40,000 volunteers engaged in youth work on a regular basis,* we feel that National Volunteering Week is a timely opportunity to celebrate their contribution and to support and encourage even more people to get involved,” said Mary Cunningham, Director of NYCI.
“We have created an online portal, which will act as a one-‘start’-shop for anyone interested in volunteering in youth work. It brings together information on where to find volunteering opportunities, what the prospective volunteer can expect and what will be expected of them, as well as support, advice, research and a wealth of free downloadable resources,” continued Ms Cunningham.
As well as supporting adults to get involved in the voluntary youth work sector, NYCI also encourages young people to volunteer.
“Our research* has shown that young people are enthusiastic to get involved and become engaged citizens.
Volunteering not only benefits these young people in the short term, but – by allowing young people to participate in activities, organize events, engage in decision making and in the development of their own projects – helps them to become responsible, critical and committed citizens, who make a really positive contribution in their own community and to society as a whole in the longer term,” concluded Ms Cunningham.

National Volunteering Week 2012
National Volunteering Week takes place from May 14th to May 20th 2012
“National Volunteering Week is that one week in the year when we encourage everyone in Ireland to give volunteering a go, to show that – even for a minute, an hour, a day – volunteering can make a big difference and be a lot of fun! You can do this as an individual, with friends or family, as a volunteer involving organisation, or as a business.”
