Youth council urges over 630,000 under 30 to make sure they are on register
The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is urging all eligible young people to register to vote as part of National Voter Registration Day, taking place today (30.04.26). The day aims to increase awareness of voter registration and ensure more people, particularly young people and other underrepresented groups, are enabled to participate in Ireland’s democracy.
With hundreds of thousands of young people eligible to vote in Ireland, NYCI is encouraging anyone who is not yet registered, or who has recently changed address, to take a few minutes today to check and update their details.
Kathryn Walsh, Director of Policy and Advocacy at NYCI, said:
“Young people are a powerful and growing part of the electorate. There are over 630,000 young people aged 18 to 29 eligible to vote in Ireland, representing almost one in five of those of voting age.
“National Voter Registration Day is a timely reminder that your voice only counts if you are registered. We know from our work with young people that most want to vote, but not everyone realises they need to register in advance. With online registration now available, it has never been easier to take part.”
NYCI is also highlighting the importance of reaching first-time voters, including the tens of thousands of young people who have turned 18 since the last National Voter Registration Day.
“Young people care deeply about the issues shaping Ireland today, from housing and climate to education and equality. Registering to vote is one of the simplest and most effective ways to have a say in those decisions. We want to make sure no young person misses that opportunity,” added Ms Walsh.
NYCI is encouraging all young people to:
- Check if they are registered
- Update their details if they have moved address
- Register for the first time if eligible
