On 30th January 2024, 25 representatives of youth and community organisations, child and youth-focused statutory agencies, and police services from north and south, gathered in Dublin for a Research and Practice Sharing Workshop to consider the issue of young people involved or at risk of involvement in social unrest and violent extremism. The event was hosted in the spirit of ongoing north-south relations as a collaboration between the National Youth Council of Ireland and the Education Authority Youth Service under the auspices of the North South Youth Work Sector Practice Development Hub.
Set against the backdrop of a night of rioting which erupted in Dublin city centre sparked by an anti-immigrant demonstration in November 2023, the workshop represented an opportunity to investigate the issues that are ‘upstream’ from the violence, draw insight from research and practice in Northern Ireland on young people’s involvement in collective violence and the role of youth work, facilitate sharing of experience and knowledge, and to dialogue and engage with new understandings.
This report provides a summary of the workshop and the main inputs, it sets out key points of the discussion on the day as attendees reflected on key learnings from the material presented. It also notes feedback from participants after the event, and it concludes with recommendations for next steps to continue the discussions, practice sharing, research and policy development.
