Ireland’s 2025-2026 United Nations Youth Delegates, Aisling Maloney and Carla Fusciardi Wallace recently attended the ECOSOC Youth Forum. Below, they share what they experienced.
From 14 to 16 April 2026, the ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council) Youth Forum took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. During the Youth Forum, young people from around the world gathered to exchange ideas, showcase innovative solutions, and strengthen youth engagement in accelerating progress on the SDGs. This year, the theme was: “Innovate, Unite and Transform: Youth Shaping the Road to 2030”.
The Youth Forum placed a special emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goals which will be under review at the 2026 High-Level Political Forum in July.
- SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation
- SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy
- SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure
- SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals
The Youth Forum demonstrated that globally, young people are leading innovation and highlighting the need for co-ordinated and inclusive solutions for sustainable development.
ENGAGEMENT DURING THE YOUTH FORUM
During the Youth Forum, we participated in 20+ engagements including plenary meetings, side-events and bi-lateral meetings.
- With the support of the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the UN and our youth delegate colleagues from Ukraine and Peru, we were delighted to welcome representatives from UN agencies, civil society and youth delegates to a round-table panel discussion on youth as fundamental partners in implementing and revitalising the Global Goals.
- Aisling attended a Ministerial Breakfast run by the United Nations Youth Office where we discussed meaningful youth participation and digital inclusion practices.
- We attended Regional discussions on youth perspectives in Europe, North America & beyond.
- A private conversation took place for UNYDs with the President of ECOSOC and UNDESA (Department of Economic and Social Affairs).
- Side events on youth leadership, discourse & counternarratives on youth, local actions, youth innovation in the fields of environment and education and barriers & best practices for meaningful youth participation.
- A FAO (Food and Agricultural Organisation) briefing session was held for UN Youth Delegates, hosted by one of Ireland’s 2022-2023 UN Youth Delegate, David Giles.
REPRESENTING THE VOICE OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN IRELAND
Aisling co-delivered a statement with Ambassador Fergal Mythen, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the UN, calling for youth perspectives to be meaningfully embedded into urban planning and local decision-making, to ensure cities become more inclusive, sustainable and liveable for current and future generations.
Carla co-delivered a statement with Ambassador Dónal Cronin, Deputy Permanent Representative of Ireland to the UN where we emphasised youth leadership and that transparency and meaningful engagement is essential to build trust among young people in the institutions that are designed to work for them.
REFLECTIONS
Through our attendance at side-events and meetings, we met with representatives across sectors to discuss youth engagement and the issues that are important to young people in Ireland. Engaging with these sessions is core to our presence in UN spaces; to learn more about how young people from a diverse range of backgrounds and contexts are developing intergenerational relationships across sectors. It is clear that young people are not waiting to be included in decision making spaces, they are stepping ahead and demonstrating that young people are leaders and co-creators in sustainable development.
We will bring those insights and the energy of the Youth Forum forward into the work of the UN Youth Delegate Programme.
