European Youth Forum Statement on Supporting People in Ukraine
We’ve all been horrified by the events unfolding in Ukraine over the last days and weeks, and the devastating impact that the aggression is having on Ukraine’s youth and the population at large.
We wanted to update you on everything that we are doing to support our colleagues from the National Youth Council of Ukraine. As a platform of strong and diverse organisations, we have the power to come together in times of need, and there is a lot we can all do to help.
The following list was compiled together with the National Youth Council of Ukraine and other members from the region, and it includes helpful information and suggested actions for you and your member organisations.
Coordination Chats have been set up – the channels we encourage you to use for collaboration on joint initiatives and receiving support requests from members of NYCU.
- The following Signal group is open to anyone as an emergency group chat for information sharing, assistance requests and direct links with Ukrainian youth activists and organisations. Join it if you are in a position to help across the Ukrainian borders or if you can send direct humanitarian support.
- For coordination of actions and initiatives between the members of the Youth Forum and the Advisory Council on Youth, you can join the following YFJ/AC chat group. The purpose of this group is to allow for smoother coordination of actions at the European level.
If you are active in Ukraine, have Ukrainian members, or if you are in contact with human rights defenders who might be in danger, share the refugee support packs in English and Russian, prepared by NYCU and RADA, which aim to support people who seek refuge in the neighbouring countries.
This can be particularly useful to organisations working on the frontline supporting the displaced population.
Amplify the voices of active organisations in Ukraine, by sharing their call for more intense sanctions and asking European states to increase their preparedness for welcoming refugees.
- For organisations organising demonstrations in support of Ukraine, check the following link for more information. Brussels-based organisations and activists can join the following civil action on Wednesday.
Check here the urgent demands of the Nation Youth Council of Ukraine published earlier today.
As shared by NYCU last week their members and other civil society organisations are in need of funds to provide humanitarian assistance at the very local level. They are exploring several options for gathering contributions and easing the issues NYCU currently face with foreign transactions. Due to administrative procedures, more information will be shared with members later this week.
While we all pray for this crisis to be over immediately, we stand ready to continue to support the NYCU throughout this turmoil and the recovery period that follows.
