From social media and AI-driven content to cyberbullying and misinformation, young people face both opportunities and challenges in their online interactions. Youth workers have a critical role in supporting young people to navigate digital spaces safely and responsibly. That’s why, to mark Safer Internet Day, we’ve compiled these useful free resources to support you in this important work.
Tackling cyberbullying: a new resource for youth workers

Cyberbullying is a growing concern in youth work, affecting young people across Ireland. Unlike traditional bullying, online harassment can follow young people home, impacting their mental health and well-being around the clock.
In response, NYCI’s National Youth Health Programme has launched the Stay Safe Online resource to help youth workers, parents, and caregivers support young people experiencing cyberbullying.
This resource provides:
- Practical strategies to address and prevent cyberbullying
- Guidance on reporting and blocking harmful content
- Tools to help young people build resilience and confidence online

Supporting youth workers in online safety
Our Child Protection Programme has developed resources to equip youth workers and volunteers with the tools they need to help young people stay safe online, including:
1. The “Connected” digital media literacy resource
In collaboration with Webwise, NYCI has developed Connected – a comprehensive resource that enhances digital media literacy among young people. This programme consists of four interactive workshops designed to help youth workers support young people in:
- Understanding online well-being – balancing digital use and mental health
- Recognising misinformation – critically assessing online information
- Exploring big data – understanding how personal data is collected and used
- Knowing their digital rights – protecting privacy and safety online

2. Free eLearning course: Online Safety and Awareness in Youth Work
Youth workers and volunteers can also access our free online course, Online Safety and Awareness in Youth Work. This self-paced eLearning programme introduces key topics in online safety, digital well-being, and the risks young people face online.
By engaging with these resources, youth workers can build their confidence in guiding young people through the digital world, helping them develop safer, more informed online habits.
