Wednesday, 18 June 2025 marked a significant milestone for youth work in Ireland as NYCI, in partnership with Maynooth University and Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), hosted a special one-day national conference to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the landmark white paper In Partnership with Youth: The National Youth Policy (1985).
Held in Maynooth University, the event brought together over 150 people from across the youth work community, including youth workers, policymakers, educators, researchers, and advocates, for a powerful day of reflection, dialogue and forward thinking. The programme traced the legacy of In Partnership with Youth, examined the state of the sector today, and looked to the future of youth work in Ireland, through the lens of partnership.
Celebrating leadership, commitment and contribution
A central part of the day was dedicated to recognising the extraordinary contributions of Professor Maurice Devlin and Associate Professor Hilary Tierney of Maynooth University, whose work has helped shape youth work education, research, and policy for decades. The event also offered a special moment to honour Mary Cunningham, NYCI’s CEO since 2002, as she prepares for her retirement later this year. Mary’s leadership has spanned some of the most challenging, and transformative, years in the history of youth work on the island.
Key conversations
Throughout the day, speakers and panellists explored what it means to work in partnership across policy, practice and research. Thought-provoking sessions delved into:
-
Youth work policy priorities past and present
-
The role of the state and government in social partnership
-
The importance of research and academic collaboration
-
Future possibilities for young people and the sector
As Professor Maria Pisani reminded attendees:
“When partnership is effective, it’s nearly invisible and unconscious.”
The conference affirmed that real partnership goes beyond policy – it lives in relationships, shared values, and the co-creation of vision and action.
Thank you
Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone who attended and contributed on the day, through your insights, questions, stories and ideas, as well as to our event partners, speakers, workshop facilitators and volunteers. The conversations sparked on 18 June will continue to shape our collective thinking and action in the years ahead.
