NYCI warmly welcomed ‘‘The Future of Youth Work’ report, recently published by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration, and Youth in July 2023. Key Points from the Report include:
Acknowledgment of Youth Work’s Value: The report recognises the crucial role of youth work in the lives of young people and society as a whole. It outlines steps to support the sector in achieving its strategic goal: providing accessible, high-quality youth work services delivered by professionals for all young people.
Focus on Youth Mental Health: The report highlights the importance of youth services as the first point of contact for young people facing various challenges. It stresses the need for support in this context.
NYCI played an active role in shaping the report. During an address to the Oireachtas Committee on April 18, NYCI highlighted key issues in youth work. The submission outlined several recommendations including the need for:
increased, multi-annual, funding
an independent review of the sector’s scale, including workforce planning
further work to address the social and economic challenges faced by young people.
