The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mick Ferron as its new Chief Executive Officer. Mick succeeds Mary Cunningham, who is retiring after 23 years of dedicated service and transformative leadership.
Mick Ferron brings over two decades of experience in youth work and leadership. Most recently, he served as Regional Youth Services Manager with Sphere 17 Regional Youth Service, where he led strategic development, service delivery, and advocacy for young people in disadvantaged communities. His career spans frontline youth work, programme design, and sectoral representation, giving him a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing young people today.
Mr Ferron’s appointment reflects NYCI’s commitment to strong, values-driven leadership as it continues its mission to represent the collective voice of the youth work sector and to build capacity, leadership, and influence to deliver better outcomes for young people.
Denis O’Brien, President of NYCI, said:
“I’m delighted to welcome Mick Ferron as the new CEO of the National Youth Council of Ireland. Mick brings a wide range of experience at the coal face of youth work, in youth work management and in advocating for young people. He is dynamic, thoughtful, and passionately committed to ensuring all young people have access to the youth work they need, provided through the many and varied programmes of our member organisations.
“On behalf of the Board, I also want to thank Mary Cunningham for her exceptional leadership, commitment, and vision over the past 23 years. Her impact on NYCI and on the youth work sector has been profound.”
Reflecting on her time at NYCI, outgoing CEO Mary Cunningham said:
“It has been an honour to lead NYCI and to work alongside so many dedicated colleagues, member organisations, and young people. Over the past two decades, we have strengthened the sector, elevated the voices of young people, and built partnerships that will last long into the future. I am deeply proud of what we have achieved together.
I know that NYCI is in very capable hands, and I have every confidence that Mick, the Board, and the team will continue to champion youth work and young people across Ireland.”
Looking ahead, incoming CEO Mick Ferron said:
“I am honoured to take on this role and to build on Mary’s outstanding legacy. NYCI plays a vital part in supporting youth work organisations and ensuring young people’s voices are heard in national policy.
My focus will be on working with our members, partners, and young people to strengthen youth work, expand opportunities, and deliver positive outcomes for all. I’m excited for the road ahead and grateful for the trust placed in me.”
This leadership transition highlights NYCI’s commitment to continuity, stability, and innovation as it serves Ireland’s young people. NYCI extends its sincere thanks to Mary for her exceptional leadership and warmly welcomes Mick as he begins this new chapter.
