The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) has announced a series of events to mark Children First Awareness Week 2025, taking place from 15–19 September.
This year’s cross-sectoral campaign highlights that child safeguarding is a collective responsibility. For the youth work sector, safeguarding is at the heart of everyday practice – ensuring that young people have safe, supportive spaces where they can learn, grow, and thrive.
A key focus of the 2025 campaign is empowering parents, guardians, and responsible adults to feel confident in their safeguarding role. The campaign encourages adults to ask questions and seek clarity on the safeguarding measures in place in organisations that support children and young people.
Youth work organisations across Ireland are already leading the way on safeguarding, with strong policies, regular training for staff and volunteers, and a commitment to ensuring parents and guardians can have full confidence that young people are supported and safe.
Helen McEntee, TD, Minister for Education and Youth, said:
“Children First Awareness Week is about reminding us that safeguarding is not just a professional duty – it is a shared responsibility. Every parent, guardian, teacher, coach, and community member has a role to play in protecting children and ensuring they grow up in safe and supportive environments. This is what we mean when we say: ‘We Are Children First.’
Mary Cunningham, CEO of NYCI, said:
“Youth work is built around putting young people first – their safety, their wellbeing, and their right to thrive. The theme ‘We Are Children First’ fits naturally with this ethos. It reflects our commitment to creating safe environments while also empowering adults to play their part in safeguarding.”
To mark the week, NYCI will host a series of webinars for the youth work sector on issues including domestic violence, child trafficking, online exploitation, and safeguarding in youth work. An in-person event on peer abuse will also take place, featuring the launch of NYCI’s new resource “When Young People Harm Each Other: Supporting youth workers to respond effectively”.
Children First Awareness Week is an opportunity for Ireland to reaffirm its commitment to child safety and welfare. By working together across sectors, we can strengthen a culture of safeguarding for all children and young people.
