Supporting young people in their skills development
Young people gain valuable transversal skills (also called soft skills or transferrable skills) through youth work, volunteering, and non-formal education. However, they often struggle to recognise and articulate these skills in ways that resonate with employers or educators.
Skills Summary, a free, easy-to-use online tool, helps young people identify, assess, and describe their transversal skills like teamwork, communication, problem solving, leadership and more.
We’re excited to announce the launch of two new skill areas on Skills Summary: Creativity and Critical Thinking. These essential skills help young people adapt, innovate, and make informed decisions – all crucial in today’s rapidly changing world.
Why are creativity and critical thinking important for young people?
Whether young people are preparing for employment, further education, or personal growth, these skills are key to their success:
🧠 Critical Thinking
- Helps young people analyse information, think independently, and make informed decisions.
- Supports problem-solving, evaluating evidence, and recognising biases.
- Equips them to navigate misinformation and digital literacy challenges.
🧩 Creativity
- Encourages self-expression, innovation, and idea generation.
- Helps them develop original solutions to challenges in youth work, education, and careers.
- Builds confidence in thinking outside the box and approaching problems creatively.
