Health promotion programme receives Gold award for work supporting young people
‘The food is so nice to get; it helps a lot. At the moment I can’t afford certain stuff and it helps me’
No4 Youth Service, Galway was awarded a Gold Standard Health Quality Mark (HQM) by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) in recognition of their work on health promotion for young people in the Galway area, at a special event held in the Harbour Hotel on Wednesday 16th May at 11am.
Presenting the award, Colleen Fahey, from the NYCI National Youth Health Programme said “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all at No4. They are committed to the highest quality standards in health promotion and it is clear that ensuring a healthy and safe place for young people and staff is a key priority here.”
‘Sofa surfing’, low incomes and lack of food major worry
Accepting the award on behalf of No4, Natalie Coen, the organsiation’s Health Promotion Officer, highlighted the importance of focusing on the young people who use the service: “Living Independently or ‘sofa surfing’ on a low income can be a major worry among the young people and along with that worry comes the worry of a lack of, or no, food. This programme is so successful in No4 because the needs of the young people are directly met; the programme is invaluable to them’.
Some of the testimonials shared by young people involved in No4 included:
‘If someone doesn’t have money it’s handy to be able to get food at No. 4 rather than having to scrounge up money for the shop’ – young person attending No4.
‘It was really nice [Young girl talking about a FEAD delivery] one time I got a hot water bottle and blanket and I was snuggled up in my room, it was around Christmas time’ – young person attending No4.
‘The food is so nice to get; it helps a lot. At the moment I can’t afford certain stuff and it helps me’ – young person attending No4.
‘It helps out a lot because I get to save some money and normally I couldn’t do that’ – young person attending No4.
Ms Fahey added: “Congratulations are in order to the staff, volunteers and young people of the service, in particular Natalie Cohen, Health Promotion Officer for No4, who guided the organisation through the process to ensure that their work is in line with national and international best practice in the area of youth health promotion. The great work carried out here supports the national healthy Ireland campaign, which is about increasing our focus on prevention and supporting young people to improve their own health and wellbeing.”
