This year, NYCI’s ‘Local Champions’ project is bigger and better than ever before, with 48 enthusiastic and capable young people engaging. Put through their paces at in-person and online trainings on everything from storytelling to media training, the Local Champions have taken their own story of youth work and become invaluable contributors to the pre-budget campaign.
Our Local Champions are mid-way through their meetings, and over 16 have been held, from former Ministers to new TDs. Already results are evident from this work, with TDs visiting local youth work organisations, putting in parliamentary questions on youth work funding, and promising to raise the issue with the Minister for Education and Youth, Helen McEntee.
But the real success of the project is the learning that the Local Champions get through their hard work and dedication. NYCI deeply believe in supporting young people to use their voice to make change, and we know the impact that can have.
As one Local Champion put it:
“For someone like me, whose life took a lot of unexpected turns, the Local Champions project has been my solution to feeling powerless and isolated. It gave me space to turn my story (with all its chaos and silence) into something that might actually matter. I’ve learned my voice isn’t just a memory of what I’ve been through; it’s a tool to shape what comes next.”
The Local Champions is a group of youth activists supported to campaign for increased funding for youth work. Applications open early each year, and the project is kindly supported by the Community Foundation Ireland.
