Ireland’s first ever UN Youth Delegates were officially announced by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD at an event held in Muckross Park College, Dublin, today (17.09.2015) to mark their departure to the Sustainable Development Summit and the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The UN Youth Delegates Eoin O’Liatháin (25) from Ballymun, Dublin and Orla Murphy (23) from Upton, Co Cork will join Ireland’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Speaking at the event, Minister Flanagan said: “I am delighted today to announce that Eoin O’Liatháin and Orla Murphy will represent Ireland as our first UN Youth Delegates. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the National Youth Council of Ireland run this programme which provides an exciting opportunity for talented Irish young people.
“Orla and Eoin will join Ireland’s delegation to the annual United Nations General Assembly which will take place in New York this month. As we celebrate 60 years of Ireland at the United Nations, active and engaged young people will be central to Ireland continuing to make a major contribution to peace and security, human rights and development in the next 60 years.”
The Delegates will participate in events around the new Global Goals for Sustainable Development. These goals provide a plan for the world to eradicate poverty, end injustice and tackle climate change. They have been agreed by 193 countries, with the final negotiations led by Ireland and Kenya.
Speaking about the potential of the summit in New York, Ms Murphy said: “On September 25th 2015, 193 world leaders will commit to 17 Global Goals to achieve three extraordinary things in the next 15 years. End extreme poverty. Fight inequality & injustice. Fix climate change. The Global Goals for sustainable development could get these things done.”
Mr O’Liatháin added: “We can be the first generation to end extreme poverty, the most determined generation in history to end injustice and inequality, and the last generation to be threatened by climate change. This is a really important time.”
The UN Youth Delegate Programme aims to ensure that young people are more involved in decision making at the UN, and that the views of Irish young people are taken into account. The Irish UN Youth Delegates will work with UN Youth Delegates from other countries to produce a Youth Delegate Declaration so that the voices of young people can be acted on at a local, national and global level.
A youth summit on the Sustainable Development Goals will be held in Ireland in the RDS on the 19th of November as part of the National Youth Council of Ireland’s One World Week, in partnership with Concern. Groups seeking to get involved can find out more on www.oneworldweek.ie
