NYCI is currently working with S3 Solutions on a national research study to assess the socio‑economic value of youth work in Ireland. This is a significant piece of work that will build on our 2012 study and provide a robust, updated evidence base on the contribution of youth work, economically, socially and across key policy areas.
This research is essential. It will help:
- support organisations in demonstrating the impact of youth work and volunteers
- inform government funding and policy decisions
- strengthen advocacy for the youth work sector
- ensure that the voices and experiences of young people are reflected in national policy
At this stage, we are gathering data across the sector, and this is where your organisation plays a vital role. This survey is not just for national organisations; we want responses from all 2024 funded services and projects at local level. Your survey, your impact.
What You Need to Do
If your organisation received funding under any of the following schemes in 2024:
- Youth Services Grant Scheme (YSGS)
- Local Youth Club Grant Scheme
- UBU Your Place Your Space
- Youth Information
➡️ Please check whether your organisation has received the survey.
➡️ Ensure that the appropriate person has access to it.
➡️ And critically, ensure that it is completed.
Not all surveys have issued yet, so please keep an eye out over the coming weeks and ensure that it is prioritised when it arrives.
Why It Matters
We know the value of youth work. We see it every day in the lives of young people and communities.
However:
We can only claim what we can evidence.
This research relies on strong, detailed information from across the sector to:
- understand the scale and reach of activities
- capture the outcomes for young people and communities
- demonstrate the social return on investment of youth work
Without this data, there is a real risk that the full value of youth work cannot be properly reflected or recognised.
A Big Ask — At a Busy Time
We know these surveys represent a significant time commitment and that this is a particularly busy time of year for many organisations.
We would not ask if it were not important.
👉 We are at a critical stage of the research
👉 Your input is essential to its success
Even where exact data is not available, best estimates are welcome, and questions can be skipped where not applicable.
Final Call
To ensure the strongest possible outcome for the sector, we are asking all organisations to:
- ✅ Keep an eye out for the survey
- ✅ Confirm the right person receives and can complete it
- ✅ Prioritise its completion
Strong participation now will ensure we all have the evidence we need to advocate effectively for youth work into the future.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement.
