Youth unemployment rate remains over 20%
The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) – which represents youth organisations with 1,400 staff and 40,000 volunteers who work with over 380,000 young people nationwide – has voiced concerns that at 20.6% the youth unemployment rate is showing little sign of decreasing.
New figures released today (29.09.15) by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that the unemployment rate for those aged under 25 has remained stagnant for the past 6 months – ranging between 20.3 and 20.7%.

Commenting on today’s figures James Doorley, NYCI deputy director said: “After a steady decline since 2012, from a high of 31% to 21% at the end of 2014, youth unemployment has remained static for the past 6 months at over 20%. This doesn’t reflect the wider economic recovery underway, which is a cause for concern. As young people were hardest hit by the recession, it is vital that they are not left behind as the wider economy recovers.
“We are calling on the Government to provide additional resources in the upcoming Budget to support young people into education, training and work experience opportunities.
“Government needs to intensify efforts to address youth unemployment, and in particular to step up implementation of the Youth Guarantee Scheme. The Youth Guarantee is designed to ensure that any young person unemployed for four months or more is guaranteed a quality education, training or work experience place,” concluded Mr Doorley.
The youth council has actively campaigned on the issue of youth unemployment for a number of years, in February of this year the organisation launched a report on JobBridge entitled ‘Stepping Stone or Dead End’ which calls for reform of the scheme. The report is available at www.youth.ie/JobBridge
