Just under 25,000 under 25s signing on
- decrease welcomed but
- almost 11,000 young people long-term unemployed ‘still far too high’
- Youth council calls for urgent implementation of new Youth Employment Support Scheme (YESS)
The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) has welcomed that the number of under 25s signing on is now below 25,000 but has raised concerns at the number of young people who are long term unemployed. New figures released today (07.12.2017) by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that the number of those aged under 25 signing on the Live Register in November 2017 was 24,951. This represents a decrease of 1,482 compared to the October 2017 figure of 26,433.* However, data from the Department of Social Protection shows that long-term unemployment remains stubbornly high.
Concern: long-term unemployed young people
Commenting on today’s figures James Doorley, NYCI deputy director said: “We welcome the decrease in young people signing on, and the fact that this figure is now under 25,000. However, we are concerned at the high number of long-term unemployed young people. The latest data from the Department of Social Protection indicate that 10,624 young people under 26 have been on the Live Register for one year or more.** This figure is still far too high and more needs to be done.”
New Youth Employment Support Scheme (YESS) urgently needed
The NYCI – which represents groups working with over 380,000 young people nationwide – has welcomed a Government announcement that a new Youth Employment Support Scheme (YESS) will be introduced in Quarter 2 of 2018. It is targeted at young jobseekers who are long-term unemployed or who face barriers to employment.
Mr Doorley said: “The programme aims to provide long-term unemployed young people with the opportunity to learn basic work and social skills in a supportive environment while on a work placement. With more jobs becoming available there is a great opportunity to assist this cohort of young people to transition back into the labour market, but that can only be achieved with the full and committed implementation of the scheme.
“So we welcome the announcement of this new scheme, as the Long Term Youth unemployment figures highlight that it’s urgently needed. But we also call on Government to ensure it commences as promised in the first half of 2018,” concluded Mr Doorley.
