Decrease in number signing on welcome but almost 15,000 young people long-term unemployed still far too high.
The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) has today voiced concern at the number of long term unemployed aged under 25. New figures released today (04.03.15) by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that the number of those aged under 25 signing on the Live Register in April 2015 was 45,857. This represents a decrease of 1,201 compared to the March 2015 figure of 47,058.*
Concern at long term unemployed young people
However, commenting on today’s figures James Doorley, NYCI deputy director said: “While we welcome the reduction in young people signing on, we should all be concerned at the high number of long-term unemployed young people. The data from the CSO indicate that 14,769 young people under 25 have been on the Live Register for one year or more.**
“Policy measures need to focus primarily on this group, to support them into a quality education, training or work experience that leads to sustainable and decent employment.”
Renewed calls to step up implementation of Youth Guarantee
“We should take these figures as a timely reminder that a continual and consistent focus must be kept on the issue of youth unemployment. In particular, we are renewing calls on Government to step up implementation of the Youth Guarantee scheme, which is designed to ensure that any young person unemployed for four months or more is guaranteed a quality education, training or work experience place, ” concluded Mr Doorley.
The Youth Council has actively campaigned on the issue of youth unemployment for a number of years, and recently published a report on JobBridge entitled ‘Stepping Stone or Dead End’ which calls for reform of the programme. The report is available at www.youth.ie/JobBridge

The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment. It includes part-time workers (those who work up to three days a week), seasonal and casual workers entitled to Jobseeker’s Benefit (JB) or Jobseeker’s Allowance (JA). Unemployment is measured by the Quarterly National Household Survey and the latest estimated number of persons unemployed as of the fourth quarter of 2014 was 213,600. (Source: CSO)
