A number of youth groups from Cork and Limerick will gather tomorrow (Saturday, Nov 12th) in Cork to celebrate One World Week. The Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork City, Cllr Tony Fitzgerald, will launch the event at which young people will gather at Camden Palace to explore justice issues around trade, consumerism and development through a musical performance and a series of workshops followed by a vibrant street action.
One World Week is a week of youth-led awareness raising, education and action on local and global justice issues to take action to bring about change. The event will explore questions about how we are connected to the world around us. How do our links – through people, food, money, technology and ideas – affect us, the world we live in and people in the Global South? Are young people active citizens or just consumers who buy first and think later?
It will also showcase the work that youth groups around Ireland are doing on these issues.
“Despite the current recession, young people continue to show a deep commitment to action in solidarity with other young people around the world. They are increasingly aware of global issues such as recession, trade and relations between countries, and how they impact on young people’s lives and opportunities. Today is a showcase of the creative ways in which young people are tackling this important issue,” stated Johnny Sheehan, Development Education Coordinator in NYCI.
The street action will take place at 4.30 on Patrick Street where young people will take to the streets in a vibrant and visual interactive experience that members of the public will be invited to participate in, to highlight inequality in access to medicine.
The groups taking part in the event are:
- Cork
- Youth Work Ireland, Gurranabraher
- Foroige, Mahon
- YMCA Cork City, Ballincollig & Cobh
- Mayfield Community Arts Centre
- EIL Intercultural Learning
