Little to celebrate in Budget 2009
NYCI has published its analysis of Budget 2009.
In a period of economic uncertainty and spiralling living costs Budget 2009 has done little to improve the lives of children and young people. Significant policies affecting children and young people were either not addressed adequately or relegated to the margins of this year’s Budget. Many children living in low income families will be worse off as a result of the announcements made in this year’s Budget. Of significant concern are the cuts made to Child Benefit. Furthermore the 1% levy on income tax for income up to €100,100 will place many young people in a vulnerable position particularly those on minimum wage.
