Social Inclusion
In the area of social inclusion we focus on a range of issues. In 2010 we are concentrating on one main area to promote the well being of youth in Ireland.
*The elimination of child poverty through the introduction of a second tier payment for children living in poverty.
What do we want to achieve?
Eliminate poverty through the introduction of a second tier payment for children living in poverty.
Why?
We believe that income support is essential to eliminate child poverty in Ireland and to ensure that those most at risk are provided with adequate income so they can live with dignity and be part of society. Currently:
*One in nine children in Ireland is living in consistent poverty (CSO, 2005).
*10.7% of children under 18 years are living in consistent poverty – which equates to over 111,000 children living in households on an income below the poverty line leading to having to go without heating due to lack of money or experiencing debt problems arising from ordinary living expenses (EU SILC, 2005).
*Just under 240,000 children were living in relative poverty in 2005 (a rate of 23.1%) (EU SILC, 2005).
How?
As the economic recession continues and unemployment rates increase, children living in low income families will be first to suffer financial pressures. To protect these vulnerable families, Government needs to increase the rate of Qualified Child Allowance and introduce a second tier payment for children living in poverty.
Progress
The Government have increased the child dependent allowance in recent Budgets, but the level of payments is still below what is required. They have also cut other benefits, e.g. Child Benefit for 18 year olds was halved in 2009, and stopped in 2010 for 18 years olds.
What can I do?
As an organisation: Lobby Government.
As an individual: Support NYCI by engaging in debate with your local TD on the importance of these issues.
